Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, is reinforcing its commitment to Asia’s rapidly emerging plastics markets by awarding annual scholarships to high performing postgraduate and undergraduate students within these fields. The Borouge Undergraduate Scholarship and the Borouge International Scholarship for postgraduates are aimed at encouraging students to excel in polymer sciences and engineering and were officially introduced during a media conference at Chinaplas on May 19, 2009.

Borouge, a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and plastics solutions, inaugurated the Borouge Undergraduate Scholarship programme by signing agreements with the South China University of Technology of Guangzhou and the East China University of Science and Technology of Shanghai.

Up to fifteen undergraduates students from each university annually will be eligible for a Borouge Undergraduate Scholarship, with the study scholarships awarded on the basis of an individual’s academic achievements. In addition, each year, the top one or two Borouge Undergraduate Scholarship students in each university will receive an additional two weeks’ training at Borouge to enhance their understanding and to provide them with hands-on experience in an innovative plastics environment.

These eminent universities in Shanghai and Guangzhou have been selected for their leading edge education in plastics and polymer engineering disciplines. The South China University of Technology in Guangzhou is the leading plastics engineering institute in Southern China and with 25,000 full-time undergraduates, 7,000 masters students and 2,000 PhD students. The East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai is the leading plastics engineering institute in Shanghai with more than 15,000 full-time undergraduate students, 6,000 graduate students and 19,000 part-time students.

Borouge also took the opportunity to announce that it will offer a generous postgraduate International Scholarship, offering a restricted number of high performing students the opportunity to further their Master or Doctoral studies. This International Scholarship would be the crème de la crème of the programme which graduating students will be strongly motivated to gain. Further details will be announced during the year.

“Investment in education is critical in building a strong industry especially one which has a strong focus on innovation. We hope that the Borouge Scholarship Programme will contribute to bringing motivated, highly-skilled people to the plastics industry in China,” comments William Yau, CEO of Borouge’s Marketing Company during the signing of the agreements with the two Universities. “While today we focus on these two very important educational institutions, we are already finalising similar agreements with other universities in other parts of China and India.”
