Advanced packaging plastics solutions provide credible alternative to traditional materials
Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions for flexible and rigid packaging, showcased its latest innovative polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) plastics solutions at the renowned Chinaplas 2009 exhibition, held 18-21 May 2009 in Guangzhou, China. Borouge is a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions.
Leveraging Borealis’ 40 years of experience at the forefront of advanced packaging, Borouge presented its polyolefin solutions for such end products as frozen food packaging, stand-up pouches, agricultural films, nonwovens and houseware containers.
Based on the unique patented class-leading Borstar® technology, innovations for the packaging sector include Borealis Nucleation Technology (BNT). This delivers a range of processor advantages such as faster cycle times with improved mechanical properties. Using Bormod™ polypropylene, the Chinese injection moulding market has strongly benefited from these properties. BNT is also employed to similar added value effect in the thermoforming and cast film segments.
Among the plastics solutions making their Chinaplas debut will be the recently introduced Borclear™, a unique random copolymer family for highly transparent polypropylene (PP) blown and cast films. The material was developed for use in food packaging and medical applications and offers blown and cast film producers a product that provides cost-effective processing and significant end-user benefits including superior optical properties. Borclear is ideal for the production of transparent films that have superior gloss and provide better pack aesthetics. Unlike other transparent films, it remains highly transparent (haze 2%) after sterilisation. In cast film higher lines speeds are possible before the onset of ‘orange peel’ than with competing grades.
In blown films, Borclear is be used in co-extrusion with Borpact™ block copolymer PP or metallocene PE to produce a range of outstanding films that bring new property dimensions with high temperature resistance, improved stiffness and creep, without losing other key properties such as clarity and/or processability.
These new additions to the flexible packaging industry compliment the Borstar Enhanced PE film products offered by Borouge which have been highly successful in China since their introduction. The Borstar Enhanced PE products are renowned for the high toughness films they produce together with the unique property balance they deliver.
“China’s packaging industry is one of the fastest evolving markets in the world, with one of the highest growth rates globally”, says Gilles Rochas, Vice President for Film & Moulding, at Borouge. “Borouge’s differentiated plastics solutions product portfolio answers the industry’s need for cost-effective yet reliable, rigid and flexible packaging solutions that improve the appearance and shelf-life of products, giving customers a competitive edge while enabling them to meet environment sustainability goals.”
To deliver smooth logistics service to its customers in China, Borouge recently announced plans to invest in two large scale logistics and distribution hubs in Guangzhou and Shanghai, able to handle a combined total of 846,000 t/y. These hubs will be complemented by a South East Asian logistics hub in Singapore that will provide packaging and warehousing facilities for 330,000 t/y. All three are expected to be operational by mid 2010.
