Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, will demonstrate its active commitment to supporting the Chinese automotive industry produce cars that are cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly. Borouge, a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions, showcased its latest solutions for the automotive market at the renowned Chinaplas 2009 exhibition, held from 18-21 May 2009 in Guangzhou, China.
Through close partnerships with key suppliers and automotive OEMs, Borouge provides innovative materials that cater to the needs of the booming automotive industry in China. Daplen™ PP resins and Xmod™ high performance short glass fibre-reinforced compounds are among specifiers' top choice in the development of interior, exterior and under-bonnet parts that meet the manufacturing, performance, weight-saving and fuel-reduction challenges facing the automotive industry. Leveraging Borealis’ proven track record and major international certifications, Borouge is now expanding its offerings in the automotive sector to supply to other related mobility markets such as motorcycles, railways and other transportation.
Borouge’s unique patented Borstar® technology provides resins for complicated applications, helping car manufacturers to cost-effectively realise products that meet and exceed the expectations of current and aspiring car owners in the region. In China, Shanghai Volkswagen turned to Daplen for its dashboard applications to ensure reliable safety performance through its better impact-to-stiffness ratio and because the material’s recycling capability makes it a more environmentally-friendly choice.
Elsewhere in the world, other leading automakers, including Volkswagen and Opel, have incorporated Borouge’s latest Daplen thermoplastic olefins (TPO) in their bumpers, dashboards, door panels and truck claddings. Daplen was used in the Fiat 500, “Car of the Year 2008”, in the Skoda Fabia, as well as for the Opel Insignia, named “Car of the Year 2009”. Daplen is part of the recent smart fortwo concept and the BMW X5. Visitors to Chinaplas can view the BMW fender display at Borouge’s booth.
In anticipation of future growth in demand, Borouge is building a new compounding manufacturing unit that will supply up to 50,000 tonnes of compounded resins to its customers annually. Located in Shanghai, the facility will be operational in mid 2010 and has the potential to expand to 80,000 tonnes per year (t/y) in the future.
To deliver smooth logistics service to its customers in China, Borouge recently announced plans to invest in two large scale logistics and distribution hubs in Guangzhou and Shanghai, able to handle a combined total of 846,000 t/y. These hubs will be complemented by a South East Asian logistics hub in Singapore that will provide packaging and warehousing facilities for 330,000 t/y. All three are expected to be operational by mid 2010.
“Borouge and Borealis have achieved a leading position in solutions for such critical aspects of automotive design as “zero gap” fit for bumpers and off-line painted body panels and we have stayed relevant to our customers by keeping our pulse on the developments of the industry in the region and globally”, says Kevin Liu, Vice President for Mobility at Borouge. “With innovations based on our unique Borstar technology and our superior compounding techniques, Borouge continues to provide the automotive industry with the advanced high performance materials they need to enhance the quality of the finished product, including improving impact strength, surface performance and aesthetics,”.
In addition to its automotive materials, a broad range of Borouge’s infrastructure and advanced packaging plastics solutions were presented at Chinaplas 2009.
