Recent field projects of Water for the World™ initiative in China, Vietnam and Italy featured

Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, is participating in the 3rd IWA-ASPIRE Conference and Exhibition to be held at the Taipei International Convention Center in Taiwan from October 18 to 22, 2009.

In line with the Conference theme of “Working for Asia-Pacific Water Sustainability”, Borouge will demonstrate how its unique Borstar® technology and innovative pipe systems can contribute to global and Asia-Pacific sustainability initiatives by building long-lasting, high quality and durable water infrastructures.

Building water infrastructures that last

Around the world, national and local governments and utility companies looking to build water pipe systems that last have been turning to Borouge for its BorSafe™ PE100 solutions.

In Asia, Borouge BorSafe PE100 was chosen by the Chinese government to build a state-of-the-art rainfall collection and water recycling system for the spectacular “Water Cube” which housed the swimming and diving events at the Beijing Olympic Games. Similarly, Borouge materials were recently chosen over ductile iron to extend the water distribution network of the prestigious Suzhou Industrial Park, a 2.88 million square-kilometre park located just outside Shanghai that has grown at 30% per annum and today provides 510,000 jobs.

Delivering water to those in need

At the IWA-ASPIRE Conference and Exhibition, Borouge will be showcasing recent field projects under Water for the World™, a unique initiative which leverages the expertise of Borouge and Borealis, and fosters local knowledge and partnerships throughout the value chain to deliver sustainable solutions for the availability of clean and safe drinking water and sanitation to areas in need.

For countries that face destructive natural phenomena like earthquakes, quality pipe systems that are durable and easy to install can play a critical role in bringing life-giving water to the water stressed areas quickly and effectively.

“Water for the World is our commitment to become a part of the solution to better manage and preserve water resources,” says Robin Bresser, Borouge Marketing Manager Business Unit Pipe. “Durable and long-lasting water infrastructures are especially important in earthquake prone zones like Taiwan as the pipe systems have to be tough enough to withstand extreme movement in the earth. Quality Pipe systems made of our BorSafe Resins systems play a key role in bringing water to the water stressed areas of China, India and many other countries around the world.”

In May 2008, Borouge brought its Water for the World efforts to Sichuan, China through the “Drop of Hope” project to benefit the many villagers affected by a major earthquake in the region. In a matter of days after the disaster, Borouge and its partners – which included the Singapore Water Association and Lien Aid, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) – provided a new water system that supplied about 60,000 litres of safe, clean drinking water a day to some 10,000 displaced victims.

The National Hospital of Paediatrics (NHP) in Hanoi, Vietnam, is another beneficiary of the Water for the World partnership between Borouge and Lien Aid. A project, called Life Lines, was initiated to deliver clean drinking water and more hand washing facilities to this hospital that treats around 400,000 children a year. Borouge supplied all the PE80, PN10 pipes and fittings made of BorSafe™ ME3440 for this project.

In September this year, Borealis, as part of its Water for the Water efforts, donated its materials for the production of water pipes urgently needed for the establishment of temporary houses in L’Aquila, Italy. The city suffered a heavy earthquake in April that caused the death of 299 people, made 28,000 people homeless and destroyed around 15,000 buildings. A water pipeline of 1.3 km length in the dimensions 90mm and 180mm is being installed.
