Borouge launches two new innovative pipe plastics solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry in the Middle East
Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value-creating plastics solutions, presented two new developments in Abu Dhabi, at the 10th anniversary meeting of Oil and Gas pipelines in the Middle East. A new top coat material Borcoat™ and a new high stress crack resistant PE100 material BorSafe™ have been intensively tested in a number of pilot projects and are now approved for full scale production at Borouge’s plant in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi.
Borcoat™, a complete steel pipeline protection solution
The Borcoat™ steel pipe coating system provides innovative mechanical protection and corrosion resistance for oil and gas pipelines that operate under extreme circumstances. The Middle East region presents many environmental challenges like high water table, aggressive soils, high ambient temperature and UV radiation and exposure to direct sunlight due to shifting of sand cover. The material properties and benefits of the new developed Borcoat™ HE3450-H give an answer to these higher demands and are highly valued by both the pipe coaters and the pipeline operators in the Middle East:
Higher indentation hardness of the coating, which reduces damage during handling and transportation
Higher softening temperature (Vicat), which allows the coating to handle service temperatures up to 90°C and extreme sun exposure
Higher melt strength, which allows coating companies to operate at a higher draw down speed
Improved processability, which gives lower electrical power consumption and significantly higher output rate at the same screw speed.
BorSafe™ HE3490-LS-H PE100 ideal for creating long-term durable pipes in tough handling conditions
Another innovative pipe plastics solution to providing value to the Oil & Gas Industry in the Middle East is the high stress crack resistant PE100 material BorSafe™ HE3490-LS-H. This material is specifically designed for tough installation conditions which make an exceptional internal corrosion barrier for steel oil and gas flow lines. These polyethylene liners can be inserted into new or old steel pipes and will greatly increase their operational life. Already a number of projects have been initiated in the oil and gas industries in Kuwait, Australia and Brunei.
BorSafe HE3490-LS-H is also ideal for municipal infrastructure where the extra tough surface enables the pipes to be installed using no-dig techniques such as “pipe bursting” or “directional drilling” without any fear of a reduction in the long term performance of the pipe. Alternatively the pipes produced from this material can be laid in an open trench without sand bedding which again dramatically reduces the cost and environmental disruption at the installation site.
“For Borouge, value creation through innovation is an essential success factor.” says Petri Lehmus, Borouge’s Innovation Centre Manager. “We are excited to see high customer interest in our latest innovations and are looking forward to further developing product solutions with our customers.”
