Borouge demonstrates its contribution to infrastructure development in China with innovative plastics solutions
Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions strengthened its leading position in the global market by showcasing its commitment to Value Creation through Innovation at Water Expo China, the only exhibition in China that is approved by China's Ministry of Commerce and sponsored by the Ministry of Water Resources in the industry of China, from October 13 – 15, 2011.

A range of polypropylene materials manufactured at its new plant in Abu Dhabi, UAE were introduced during the exhibition. These materials have been specifically developed for the manufacture of non-pressure pipes used in gravity sewage and drainage applications for both infrastructure and industry. The light weight pipes produced from these materials are easy to handle and install, and they provide a long maintenance free life being resistant to the corrosion and cracking that occurs in rigid concrete and asbestos cement pipes.
Included in the range is BorECO™BA212E, which is a high modulus PP block copolymer grade (PP-HM), which can be used to produce solid wall or structured wall non pressure pipes and large diameter spiral wound pipes for industrial sea intakes, outfalls and large diameter sewage systems. The latest example of the latter is in Abu Dhabi in the Middle East, where local pipe producer Union Pipe Industries is using the Bauku spiral wound technology to produce a 3 metre diameter PP pipeline for a local refinery project. This is the first pipeline of its kind to be produced in the Middle East and has been pioneered by Borouge in close cooperation with the system owner, consultants and customer.
In China, Borouge customer and leading pipe producer Shanghai ERA is using BorECO™BA212E to produce large diameter twin walled non pressure pipes and an example of their 800mm diameter pipe will be displayed on the Borouge stand during Water Expo China.
Borouge also introduced its new high stress crack resistant (HSCR) PE100 material at Water Expo China, which is a polyethylene pressure pipe grade specifically designed for difficult installation conditions.
With increasing urbanisation and continued economic growth, China is struggling to upgrade its infrastructure while the utility companies are keen to adopt new solutions that speed up pipeline renovations and installations and still provide a long maintenance free service lifetime. Therefore increasingly utility companies are turning to “No-Dig” technology to renovate their old leaking pipelines or install new ones because this technology saves considerable cost and reduces the disruption to the community.
However, using some of these techniques such as insertion or directional drilling may cause damage or scores to the surface of the polyethylene (PE) pipe which can develop into cracks and lead to premature failure of the pipeline. In order to overcome this problem, Borouge developed their new HSCR PE100 polymer BorSafe™HE3490-LS-H.
"This material provides a much higher resistance to crack growth than the standard PE100 materials. For example, in notched pipe tests, pipes produced from HSCR materials outperform standard PE100 pipes by more than an order of magnitude.” said Cindy Wang, Application Marketing Manager of Borouge.
PE 100 pipes made from BorSafe™ HE3490-LS-H were successfully used in the provision of a new water supply pipeline to the joint China – Singapore Eco City in Tianjin. During the construction of the city additional water was required but the new source that the Tianjin TEDA Water Company had identified lay on the far side of the Ji Canal. They wanted to use a PE100 pipeline for speed but they were concerned about any surface damage to the pipe that could be caused by the horizontal directional drilling installation process under the canal. Ultimately they used pipe made from BorSafe™ HE3490-LS-H for the river crossing section to ensure that any damage incurred would not reduce the lifetime of the pipeline.
