Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, organised on October 26, 2011, a "Water Day" event in collaboration with the East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai, to underline its sustainable solutions that address environmental challenges such as the availability of safe drinking water. The event reflects Borouge's strong commitment to sustainable growth through working closely with the leading universities in China.

Today, more than one billion people have no access to clean water and double that number lack proper sanitation facilities. As such the United Nations set a Millennium Development Goal to halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. This challenge is not about finding more water; it’s about better managing and preserving the resources we have.
To provide sustainable solutions to the availability of safe water and sanitation, Borouge and Borealis launched the ‘Water for the World™’ initiative in 2007 as a global programme. More than 260,000 people throughout the world have benefited from the programme ever since and we have built a platform of partnerships with stakeholders from the plastics industry, renowned organisations and agencies. Borouge has been very successful in supporting projects which clearly demonstrate the value of polyethylene (PE100) as well as polypropylene pipe systems and at the same time provide important assistance to the local communities in different countries such as China, India, Nepal and Vietnam.
A range of successful cases under 'Water for the World™' programme were introduced during the “Water Day” event. Some cases were linked to the latest government policy introduced by China recently. Participants were strongly impressed by the innovative plastics solutions and water efficiency from Borouge.
Through its 'Water for the World™' programme, Borouge provided drinking water to the Sichuan earthquake resettlement camp in China in 2008. Moreover, Borouge worked closely with several Chinese water companies such as Shanghai Fengxian and Beijing Water Group in reducing their water losses and analyzing their asset development and management. During 2011 Borouge takes an active role in organising a number of technical seminars and conferences in China, and will highlight the need to conserve and recycle water in the water starved regions.
Furthermore, Borouge reinforces its commitment to Asia’s rapidly emerging plastics markets by awarding annual scholarships to high performing postgraduate and undergraduate students within the field of polymer sciences and engineering. Students are selected based on their academic performance and some are offered the opportunity to train at a Borouge location thereby obtaining hands-on experience in an innovative and dynamic environment.
As part of the “Water Day”, Borouge announced the winners of its undergraduate Scholarship and presented them the awards.
“There is a clear need for companies to take responsibility by assisting poorer people to have access to clean water and developing innovative products that help to protect our water resources,” Robin Bresser, Marketing Manager, Pipe Business Unit of Borouge, comments. “Today, more and more companies are placing the issue of water on their corporate business agenda. With 'Water for the World™', Borouge and Borealis have underlined their leadership role and are going a step further.”
