Borouge was awarded the 2011 Middle East Chemical Week Award for the “Project of the Year” category. The award was granted to Borouge during a ceremony held in Abu Dhabi in October 2011 and hosted by The World Refining Association aims to recognise excellence in the UAE petrochemical industry.
H.E. Rashed Saud Al Shamsi, Director of Petrochemicals at Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Chairman of the Board of Borouge's Marketing Company opened the 2011 Middle East Chemical Week which was also attended by Faisal Al Shemsi, Senior Vice President for Borouge 3 who briefed the audience about Borouge 2 Project.
In 2010, under the project name of Borouge 2, Borouge tripled the polyolefins manufacturing capacity of the plant. An approximate US$ 5 billion investment in 1.4 million tonnes per year (t/y) capacity enables Borouge to produce a total of 2 million t/y of BorstarÒ enhanced polyolefins, spearheading the company’s entrance into polypropylene production. The project hosts, along with other units, a 1.5 million t/y ethane cracker and a 752,000 t/y Olefins Conversion Unit (OCU), both the largest in the world.
The uniqueness of Borouge 2 project lies in the fact that all its units have started up on time and with an outstanding safety record that sets a new benchmark for the industry, and with minimum environmental impact to significantly reduce flaring during start-up.
