Borouge is one of the eight founding members of GPCA and it has been in the forefront of every major activity that has taken place under the auspices of the Association since its inception. Being the only trade association of its kind in the Gulf region and acting as a collective voice of the member Companies, GPCA supports the growth and sustainable development of the petrochemicals and chemicals industries in the Gulf region. It provides members with updated data on the industry and has steadily enhanced its role to offer multiple platforms for stakeholders to network and share best practices in the Industry. The GPCA also adopts the Responsible Care® Initiative to ensure consistent and collective improvement of Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) across the GCC region.
Established in 1998 as a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Austria based Borealis, Borouge is a groundbreaking international partnership at the forefront of the next generation of plastics innovation. Borouge, together with Borealis, was the first company in the region to sign the Responsible Care® Global Charter in 2006. The Charter is the chemical industry’s global voluntary initiative that aims to improve industry-wide performance in the areas of health, safety and environment, product stewardship and advanced sustainability.
With its base in the United Arab Emirates and Marketing & Sales head office in Singapore, Borouge built the first petrochemical facility in the Middle East in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi in 2001. In 2010, Borouge increased the polyolefins manufacturing capacity of the plant to reach 2 million tonnes per year (t/y). The expansion was successfully completed with an outstanding safety record that sets a new benchmark for the industry, and with minimum environmental impact.
Borouge is currently investing in a further expansion project called Borouge 3. The project will be completed by the end of 2013 resulting in an additional capacity of 2.5 million t/y being fully operational by mid-2014. The new project will help Borouge further expand its operations with infrastructure projects, increase sales volumes, open new markets and provide a wider range of differentiated polymers.
Borouge has sales offices in ten strategic locations across the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, the Indian sub-continent and Africa, and dedicated logistics hubs in Asia with warehousing and packing facilities in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Singapore. Borouge has a manufacturing plant in Shanghai and a second plant is planned for Guangzhou.
As a company focused on “Value Creation through Innovation”, Borouge is investing in a new Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi which will soon work with local and international educational institutions to develop the competence of polymer science in the UAE. It will focus on innovations for the infrastructure, automotive and advanced packaging industries.
Committing to the principles of Responsible Care®, Borouge has been active in addressing the global water challenge through its significant “Water for the World™” initiative that it launched in 2007 together with Borealis. More than 260,000 people in different parts of the world have benefited from this initiative that fosters local knowledge and partnerships to provide sustainable solutions for the availability of safe water and sanitation.
