Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, reinforces its market leadership at Chinaplas 2013, held in Guangzhou from May 20-23. Leading the pack in providing durable and innovative pipe fittings systems for residential, infrastructure, agriculture and industrial applications, Borouge has been instrumental in its partnership with value chains, delivering several large scale applications and humanitarian projects for the plastics pipe industry in China and the rest of the world.

Supporting major industrial projects
Polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) pipes play a major role in ensuring continuous industrial development whilst protecting the environment. At the Ningbo Chemical Industrial Park, wastewater from the plants is treated and then transported 1.6 kilometres off the coast to a deep sea discharge point. The 800mm diameter PE pipes were produced by Chinaust Shanghai using Borouge’s BorSafe™ HE3490-LS PE100 polymers that are ideal for making high quality large diameter PE pressure pipes.

In the Middle East, many petrochemicals plants are situated along the coast where seawater is used for cooling processes. Nowadays, polyolefin materials are replacing GRP or concrete pipes for transporting seawater to and from plants. In a recent project in Abu Dhabi, 2 and 3 metre diameter spiral wound pipes were produced by local pipe producer Union Pipes Industry using Borouge’s BorECO™BA212E PP-B High Modulus (HM) grade. These polymers are considerably stiffer than PE, making the manufactured pipes more cost competitive against GRP or concrete pipes.

Improving water supply
Reducing water losses and improving water quality in the rapidly growing cities in China is a major challenge. BorSafe™ HSCR PE100 polymers are ideal for producing pipes that are installed using trenchless technology or in rocky soils, due to their toughness and reliability. This allows pipeline renovation to be carried out without bringing the life of the cities to a standstill.

“BorSafe HSCR PE100 polymers are ideal for producing pipes that are installed using trenchless technology and in rocky soils due to their toughness and reliability,” says Khalfan Al Muhairi, Vice President Marketing Centre Pipe at Borouge. “Lining high pressure steel pipes with PE pipes can significantly extend the lifetimes of these valuable assets by reducing corrosion and abrasion.”

Increasing the available water supply by water treatment and recycling is already underway in some Chinese cities. In Beijing, the “LiangMaiQiao” water recycling scheme transports 160,000 cubic metres of water to the JiuXianQiao water treatment plant. Many of the 1,200 mm diameter PE pipes for this purpose were supplied by Chinaust using Borouge’s BorSafe™HE3490-LS material. This PE100 material is specifically engineered to efficiently produce large diameter pipes, as it minimises the gravity flow or “sag” that occurs when the hot material exudes from the die head.

Addressing long-term drainage challenges
High modulus PP materials such as Borouge’s BorECO™BA212E PP-B HM can also be used to manufacture twin walled pipes for drainage and sewage systems, which can be applied to tackle problem soils. In the city of Dongfang on Hainan Island, where the soil quality is poor, the city's sewage and drainage pipelines need to be buried deeper to avoid slippage. The pipes also need to be more robust. In a recent project, nearly 5 km of drainage pipes were installed under the highway crossing the city of Dongfang and Shanghai ERA produced higher ring stiffness pipes using Borouge’s BorECO™ BA212E PP-B HM. This ensures that the pipes would resist deformation better thereby resolving Dongfang’s drainage problems in the long term despite the difficult soil conditions.

Continuous innovation
Borouge recently launched Borstar® Aquility™, a range of PE polymers specifically designed for the manufacture of micro-irrigation systems, following the successful trials in India with system producer Kothari Agritech. Using one of the new micro-irrigation systems produced by Kothari Agritech’s local sugar cane farmer, Baburao Waghmode, was able to sustain a three-fold increase in acreage with his limited water supply and improve his yield from 50 to 80 tonnes per acre.
“We see great advantages in the pre-compounded Borstar Aquility LE 3406 grade such as ease in production, increased output, energy savings and improved field durability due to the superior carbon black dispersion,” comments Ashish Kothari, Production Manager at Kothari Agritech.

Industry commitment
PE pipe quality is a key issue in China’s gas industry and Borouge has worked tirelessly to support the industry to establish quality procedures and identify reliable local PE pipe suppliers who can provide high quality products and services for sustainable solutions. This has dramatically reduced the number of poor quality pipes in the market and increased the gas engineers’ confidence in plastics pipe systems. Borouge also continues to reinforce its commitment to increasing knowledge and expertise in China and is working with other PE100+ Association members and the China Plastics Piping Association (CPPA) to organise the third in a series of conferences that bring international speakers to China.

Responding to water challenges
Borouge, together with Borealis, work to improve access to water and sanitation within poor communities through their “Water for the World™” initiative. This includes supporting organisations such as Lien Aid and Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) in providing sustainable solutions to clean water and sanitation. Through this initiative, Borouge has directly reached more than 300,000 people all over the world who do not have a proper access to clean water and sanitation by bringing its expertise to community field projects, leveraging its leadership in innovative plastics solutions and promoting water efficiency in its operations.
Borouge remains committed in further expanding both its product range and value chain activities in China and rest of Asia.

Borouge was established in 1998 as a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Austria based Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions. It is a groundbreaking international partnership at the forefront of the next generation of plastics innovation.
