Borouge, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, reinforced its position as a supplier of choice of a wide range of polyolefin products for the plumbing and heating pipe systems for home and indoor solutions for the building and construction industry at the Big 5, an international building and construction show held in Dubai from 25-28 November 2013.

As one of the major tradeshows in building and construction, the Big 5 provided Borouge with an opportunity to demonstrate its latest offerings in PP-R, PP-RCT, PP-B, BorECO™ and BorSafe™ solutions, technologies and services that contribute to the improvement of clean water distribution and drainage system for the infrastructural sector.

Borouge is a member of the Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC) which was established in 2010 as an independent forum that helps shaping policies for the built environment and facilitating collaborative solutions to promote sustainable practices in the UAE.

“Being part of the EGBC enables the Company to engage with key policy makers in the region and promote green credentials on the growing number of plastics pipes systems used in modern buildings across the region,” Khalfan Al Muhairi, Vice President, Marketing Centre Pipe at Borouge, added.

Polyolefin solutions for hot and cold water systems
Borouge offers a range of high quality PP-R, PP-RCT and PEX polypropylene and polyethylene materials for the manufacture of hot and cold water pipe systems. These corrosion resistant materials, which are rapidly replacing metal pipes in buildings throughout Europe and the Middle East, provide long maintenance free operation at high temperatures.

“Such demanding application requires materials to be produced up to the highest standards because any failure of a system in a large building or complex can result in high costs. In addition as the pipes are transporting drinking water it is also essential that they should be safe and contamination free to ensure the protection of public health,” said Al Muhairi.

Borouge’s RA130E PP-R has been fully tested against the requirements of ISO 15874 by the Exova Laboratory in Sweden. In addition, the taste odour properties of the material are regularly checked by the independent German TZW laboratory and RA130E is registered in the UK Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) as being suitable for use with hot water (up to 70°C) and cold water.
Etihad Towers is one of the many high rise buildings in Abu Dhabi that installed hot and cold water supply systems manufactured from Borouge’s RA130E PP-R material. The prestigious property covers a total area of over half a million square metres, and the tallest of the five towers is over 300 metres height. Designing, producing and installing the hot and cold water systems for such a large development was challenging and demanded the highest quality of products and workmanship. The pipe systems were produced by World Plastics based in Jordan and supplied through Bani Marban International Trading of Abu Dhabi. The quantity of PP-R pipes required for the complex was staggering, totalling over 45,000 metres of pipes of all sizes including 5,500 metres of 160mm diameter pipe.

Borouge also supplies a new range of PP-RCT compounds from Borealis to cater to the higher performance requirements of ISO 15874 and enable thinner walled pipes to be used in many situations. This grade of PP pipes us is also recognised for its higher flow capacity.

By cross-linking the molecular structure of polyethylene (PE), it is also possible to produce a pressure pipe that is capable of operating at high temperatures in a domestic or commercial heating system. Borealis have well established PE grades for cross-linking using peroxide (PEX-a) and irradiation (PEX-c) technologies, which are also available through Borouge.

Polyolefin systems for internal drainage systems
For the applications of non-pressure sewage and drainage systems (internal and external) Borouge offers two grades of BorECO PP-B which are produced in Abu Dhabi. These are very easy to extrude and injection mould or fabricate to form system components. Their high stiffness makes them extremely attractive from a product cost point of view. The smooth bore of the pipes and the high resistance to abrasion make these two grades ideal for gravity drainage and sewage systems. These low MFR PP-B materials also have an excellent stress crack resistance and are optimised for a lifetime well in excess of 100 years.

Recognised for their high stiffness and easy processing, BorECO high modulus PP-B materials have been used to manufacture a wide range of products. By adding mineral fillers, the materials can also be used to manufacture the acoustic internal drainage systems sometimes referred to as “silent pipes.” In the past, the required level of acoustic damping was only possible using thick walled cast iron pipes, but these were difficult and costly to install. By adding mineral fillers to BorECO BA212E in the central layer of a three-layer pipe construction, the pipes can meet the acoustic damping requirements of DIN 4100. At the same time, the PP-B material can also deal with the high temperature discharge from kitchen and washroom appliances and meet the high temperature tests in EN 12056. These systems have been used successfully in a number of prestigious projects around the world, including many buildings in the Middle East.

One example is Claren Towers development on Burj Dubai Boulevard close to downtown Burj Khalifa in Dubai. This complex includes two elegantly designed mid-rise towers and boulevard apartments. The acoustic internal drainage systems were manufactured by Gulf Dura Industries based in Al Ghail Industrial City in Ras Al Khaimah using BorECO BA212E.  The 50mm to 110mm diameter pipe systems were light in weight and easy to install. This will ensure that the future owners will be able to enjoy a quiet and pleasant environment.

Borouge was established in 1998 as a joint venture between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Austria based Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions. It is a groundbreaking international partnership at the forefront of the next generation of plastics innovation.
