Shanghai, China – 24 September 2018: World leaders in advanced polyolefins Borouge and Borealis showcase an enhanced portfolio of solutions for renewable energy, transmission, distribution and telecommunications applications at Wire China 2018. Visit the showcase at Wire China from 26 to 29 September at hall W1, stand W1F02, Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

An expanded world class portfolio

Borouge’s commitment to the industry was underscored by the completion and commissioning of Borouge 3 in 2016. The company has since expanded its portfolio to include two additional products: Borlink™ LS4201H for high voltage applications and Visico™ for low voltage applications. Both products are produced in its state-of-the-art XLPE plant in Ruwais, United Arab Emirates under the same exacting world class standards as those at the Borealis plant in Stenungsund, Sweden.

Tailored solutions for greater flexibility

While the global wire and cable industry has traditionally recognised voltage as the defining standard for power cables, utilities are increasingly seeking more compact cable solutions, with a shift in focus from design to function. To cater to this new approach, Borouge has embarked on the production of XLPE solutions that are designed not only for defined voltages, but also for maximum operating stresses.

The new Borlink™ LS4201H insulation compound is designed for HV cables of up to 161kV with a maximum operating stress of 7kV/mm, complementing the existing Borlink™ LS4201S, which is intended for power cables of up to 230kV and a maximum operating stress of 10kV/mm. Produced under superior cleanliness levels synonymous with the propriety Borlink™ technology, Borouge is now able to offer an extended range of tailored XLPE solutions with varying cleanliness specifications, giving producers greater flexibility of design to meet the specific functional requirements of their products.

Developed on Borlink™ technology with cutting-edge low-scorch base resin, Borlink™ LS4201H features the benefits of superior scorch security and reliability for long production campaigns and a reduced degassing burden. Cables produced with LS4201H are also fully type tested under the GB/T 11017 and IEC 60840 international standards, demonstrating the consistency and robustness of Borouge XLPE solutions under the most challenging of test conditions.

“As a reliable partner to the wire and cable industry, we continue to push boundaries to create and deliver value to be at the forefront of meeting the evolving needs of our customers and partners, said Michael Pell, Senior Vice President Marketing at Borouge. “By enhancing our production assets through ongoing investments, expanding our offerings, and actively engaging the entire energy value chain, we can offer a comprehensive portfolio of tailored solutions on a truly global scale

Supporting the needs of China’s offshore market

In line with its ability to minimise the generation of oxidised contaminants throughout the production campaign, Borlink™ technology drives long-term reliability and durability in cables by effectively
maintaining high levels of cleanliness within the insulation compound. This makes it ideal for complex applications such as offshore wind power, as it enables the production of longer cable lengths without factory joints, driving ease of installation with a significantly lower risk of failure.

The technology’s ideal combination of properties recently made it the preferred solution for the submarine cables used in china’s Longyuan Dafeng offshore wind park project, which called for three 220kV AC export cables, each in a length of 29.8km with a maximum of one joint per length. In order to meet a six-month timeline to produce, degas, load and ship the system, appointed producer Hengtong Submarine Power Cable Co. Executed the production process in a 25-day non-stop extrusion run which utilised over 165 tonnes of Borlink™ XLPE material and avoided the use of joints – a new world record for the longest ever single extrusion campaign.

“Borealis and Borouge are committed to innovation and expertise. With over 50 years of proven experience in XLPE and semicon development, including a 15-year track record in low-scorch HV XLPE technology, our partnerships with global subsea cable producers are based on the recognised value of our innovation capacity,  quality consistency as well as application expertise,” said Bart Verheule, Head of Marketing - Energy at Borealis. “Because of our continuous investment in new technologies, our customers know that they can rely on our leadership in innovation for the most demanding industry segments”.

Improving supply reliability

Borouge’s investment in Visico™ production capacity will boost its ability to bring low voltage solutions to customers in Asia and the Middle East.

Visico™ delivers the following benefits to cable makers:

  • Enhanced scorch performance for longer production runs, leading to higher output and reduced scrap.
  • Visico™ is a reactor-based compound and as such, brings greater material consistency as compared to compounded and blended products.
  • A simplified material handling process; the system utilises only two compounds as compared to those of standard low voltage polyethylene solutions, which are based on multiple components.
  • Ambient curing system that removes the need for forced during in steam or hot water baths, leading to lower energy costs and subsequently, a lower carbon footprint.

Value adding solutions that support cable reliability

Rapid urbanisation across many parts of China has led to a greater demand for quality, value added solutions that support cable reliability.

In this area, polyethylene solutions like Visico™ are a viable alternative to PVC due to the following:

  • High durability critical to the realibility and longevity of underground cables.
  • Strong resistance to abrasion, impact and moisture.
  • Free of toxic compounds and hence, safe for the environment.
  • Enables greater cost effectiveness in production by increasing line speed through higher extrusion outputs.
