Our manufacturing operations
Ruwais, Abu Dhabi
Central to Borouge's operations is the petrochemical production plant in Ruwais, about 250 km west of Abu Dhabi City in the United Arab Emirates. Borouge invested US$1.2 billion to build the first petrochemical facility in the Middle East there, equipped with the proprietary Borstar® ® technology from Borealis. Initially having a total manufacturing capacity of only 450.000 tons per year, by 2005 the complex consisted of an ethylene cracker (EU1) built by alliance Bechtel/Linde and two Borstar® bimodal polyethylene units constructed by Tecnimont (PE1/PE2), each capable of producing 300,000 tonnes of bimodal polyethylene.
In 2010, under the project name of Borouge 2, Borouge tripled the polyolefins manufacturing capacity of the plant. The approximately US$ 5 billion investment enables Borouge to produce a total of 2 million tonnes of Borstar® polyolefins per year. This project includes an additional ethane cracker, a third polyethylene unit, an olefins conversion unit for the conversion of ethylene to propylene and two new polypropylene units, spearheading the company’s entrance into polypropylene production.
The 1.5 million t/y ethane cracker (EU2) was built by The Linde Group at a cost of US$1.3 billion and is considered to be the largest in the world. The first-of-its-kind and largest olefins conversion unit (OCU) in the world, producing 752,000 t/y of propylene, was built by Samsung Engineering using APP Lummus technology for US$ 300 million. This investment provides for the supply of propylene for the production of 800,000 t/y of polypropylene on two similarly-sized units. In addition, a new polyethylene unit with an annual capacity of 540,000 tons per year was built. The polyolefin units were constructed by Tecnimont of Italy at a cost of US$1.9 billion. Offsite and utility facilities were completed by Tecnicas Reunidas of Spain at a cost of US$1.2 billion.

Borouge 3 Expansion project
Borouge is expanding its petrochemical plant at Ruwais in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates by 2,5 million tonnes per year (t/y) to a total annual capacity of 4.5 million tonnes by mid-2014. The project, entitled Borouge 3, includes an ethane cracker, two polyethylene units and two polypropylene units as well as a low density polyethylene (LDPE) unit. Bechtel, a global leader in engineering, construction and project management consultancy, is providing management support for the implementation of the project.
Preparation of the Borouge 3 site, comprising some 3.6km2, is undertaken by Al Asab General Transportations and Contracting Establishment of Abu Dhabi. The site is adjacently east of Borouge’s existing facilities.
A new (and third for Borouge) ethane cracker will produce 1.5 million tonnes of ethylene per year and is being built by The Linde Group at a contract value of US$1.075 billion.
Two additional Borstar® polyethylene units producing 1.080,000 tonnes per year, two additional Borstar® polypropylene units producing 960,000 tons per year and a 350,000 t/y LDPE (low density polyethylene) unit, with unique technology from Borealis for high value wire and cable applications, will be built by the joint venture consortium Samsung / Tecnimont at a value of US$ 1,255 billion for Borstar® units and 400 MUSD for LDPE plant.
In addition, a contract worth US$ 935 million for the Utilities and Off-site facilities for the expanded plant is awarded to Hyundai Engineering and Construction of South Korea.

China
Borouge has invested approximately US$ 30 million in a manufacturing plant in Shanghai with an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes and the potential for expansion to 80,000 tonnes per year. Resins are compounded here specifically for customers in the growing automotive and appliance markets. A second plant is now planned for Guangzhou and is expected to be supplying 105,000 tonnes per year of compounded resins by 2012.
