To meet ever-increasing market demand, Borouge plans a multi billion dollar expansion at Ruwais. The project, ‘Borouge 2’, is scheduled to commence production in 2010. This world-scale project will triple existing production capacity to two million tonnes per annum, including for the first time, polypropylene.

The Borouge 2 expansion will see the construction alongside the existing facilities of:

• one of the world’s largest ethane crackers producing 1.4 million tonnes of ethylene per annum
• the world’s largest olefins conversion unit,
• a 540,000 tonnes per annum Borstar PE plant and
• two 400,000 tonnes per annum Borstar PP plants.

PP is one of the most versatile polymers available, with applications in virtually all end-use plastics markets, high recyclability and an extended shelf-life. The global requirement for products made from PP is growing dramatically, not least in China.

This expanded production in Ruwais will open new markets to Borouge where its innovative supply chain solution will bring it close to its customers and increase speed to market.

EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contracts for the Borouge 2 cracker, polyolefins plants, olefins conversion unit and offsites and utilities have all been awarded and the early works construction of the project started in mid-2007.

Borouge is also investing in research and development with an Innovation Centre located in Abu Dhabi to complement Borouge 2, jointly developed by Borouge and its co-owner Borealis.  It will concentrate on developing practical solutions for plastic material applications, be fully operational in 2009 and is expected to employ up to 45 technical staff in the initial phase.
