Guided by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), the Responsible Care® Global Charter was launched in 1985 in Canada as the chemical industry's global voluntary initiative under which companies, through their national associations, work effectively to continuously improve Health, Safety and Environmental performance across the entire value chain. By following the guiding principles of Responsible Care®, companies must communicate with stakeholders about their products and the processes they employ to manufacture and supply safe and affordable products that bring tangible benefits to society.
Responsible Care® was commended by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg for being a significant contribution to sustainable development by the chemical industry.
Borouge is committed to the continued support of the Responsible Care® Global Charter and to working in conjunction with the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) as one of its eight founding members, towards a common goal of full Responsible Care® membership for all GCC companies. Reinforcing our commitment to sustainability, Borouge cosigned the Responsible Care® Global Charter with Borealis in 2006, being the first Gulf-based company to do so. This commitment was reinforced in 2009 when Borouge CEO signed a Declaration of Support (click here).
In September 2011, Borouge signed the Responsible Care® Global Charter with the Association of International Chemical Manufacturers (AICM) in China. This act showed the commitment of both signatories to share Responsible Care® best practices with Chinese chemical industry entities, transcending differences in culture, national legislation and industry environment. They will also advocate joint responsibilities with domestic chemical industry players and targeted media to achieve a responsible chemical industry image and reputation in China.
At the same time, in November 2011, Borouge also signed a letter of commitment to Responsible Care® with the Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SCIC). As a signatory company, Borouge is committed to fulfilling the Ten Guiding Principles of Responsible Care®, to implement its Codes of Management Practices that are relevant to the business operations in Singapore, and to uphold its Eight Fundamental Features, which include sharing best practices and exchanging experiences through information networks, as well as to communicate openly on HSE matters with interested parties from inside and outside the industry.
In 2013 Borouge attained the Responsible Care® Management System RC14001 certification, becoming the first company in the Gulf to have achieved this on an international level across all of its operations. This certification broadens the scope of the ISO 14001 standard beyond the traditional environmental management system, to include health and safety, security, distribution, product stewardship, process safety, community awareness and emergency response.
