Caps and Closures

Standard and customised solutions forchanging consumers lifestyle

Plastic caps and closures increasingly replace traditional metal closures. Borouge provides a range of specialised products for both standard and custom caps and closures. Our customer-driven approach to innovation, coupled with our polymer design capabilities and exclusive technologies, such as Borstar Nucleation Technology (BNT), enable us to deliver timely, value-added products that meet the needs of this rapidly evolving sector.

Standardised closures

Beverages such as carbonated soft drinks, tea, juices and mineral water use standardised caps that are designed for specific bottle neck design.

The major material requirements of standard closures are:
  • Easy processing
  • Good performance at the filling line
  • Ease of opening
  • Security of the content
  • Preservation of taste and odour of the product

Customised Caps

Customised caps are used in several different applications such as beverages, liquid foods, personal care products and household industrial chemicals (HIC). The material requirements that apply to most customised applications are:

  • User convenience,
  • Child safety,
  • Innovative dispensing feature
    • Hinged caps,
    • Closures on gable top packages
    • Stand-up pouches
    • Wide-mouth lids, and sprays,
  • Shelf appeal
    • Exceptional gloss
    • Transparency
    • Attractive colour
    • Wide-mouth lids, and sprays,
  • Product differentiation and recognition for brand owners.

Benefits for end-users and converters

Borouge understands consumers’ changing lifestyle patterns and has tailored its caps and closures grades along the following categories:

  • On-the-go lifestyle: these are lightweight yet solid products that are easy to open but do not leak; they retain their properties in all weather conditions.
  • Individualistic approach: smaller sizes and fun packaging, bright and glossy colours and innovative shapes
  • Concern for safety: tamper-proof and child-proof closures.

To meet these consumer requirements, plastics converters need versatile grades, with excellent mechanical and flow properties, to allow for new designs and colours that increase brand visibility and shelf appeal.

We offer a complete range of high density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP) homopolymers, random and block (heterophasic) copolymers that cater to all these requirements.

Borpure HDPE grades

BorPure grades are made with our proprietary Borstar multimodal technology, which allows for superior Environmental Stress Crack Resistance (ESCR) and productivity advantages. Superior ESCR of Borouge over unimodal grades gives convertors and brand owners opportunity for making their product lighter especially with carbonated beverages. On the productivity front, at an MFR of 1.5 g/10 min (190°C), Borpure materials show the same fluidity as a MFR 4 unimodal material. In injection moulding, this fluidity allows for a reduction in injection pressure, creating energy savings of up to 10%.

BorPure MB6561 and BorPure MB6562

BorPure MB6561 and BorPure MB6562 are high density polyethylenes (HDPE) that improve processability and allow for the light-weighting of closures to enable material reduction and cost optimisation. Their excellent organoleptic performance ensures the preservation of the product’s natural taste.

BorPure MB6561 is designed for screw caps for still water, tea and juice. BorPure MB6562 is formulated for controlled opening and closing of carbonated soft drinks and sweetened beverages.

BD950MO is a stiff and impact resistant polypropylene (PP) heterophasic copolymer, based on the proprietary Borstar Nucleation Technology (BNT). It is designed for water and carbonated soft drinks caps and can be processed by both compression and injection moulding. In addition to its outstanding mechanical properties and very low stress whitening, it also offers exceptional dimensional consistency regardless of colour pigments, and considerable potential for cycle time and weight reduction.

HG385MO is a polypropylene (PP) homopolymer with MFR 25, also based on the proprietary Borstar Nucleation Technology (BNT). It was specifically developed for the injection moulding of different customised caps and has the following features:

  • Good flow properties for complex design
  • Excellent antistatic behaviour
  • Optimised mechanical properties
  • Good gloss
  • Dimensional stability, uniform shrinkage with different pigments
  • Down gauging potential to reduce cycle times by up to 10%.
