Two decades of commitment to exponential growth, operational excellence and plastics innovation
Dubai, UAE – 28 November 2018: With ambitious future investments to increase polyolefin capacity in Ruwais and strengthen its innovation capabilities to reinforce its leading position in the market place, Borouge celebrated its 20th anniversary with industry leaders and partners during the 13th Annual GPCA Forum being held at Madinat Jumeirah in Dubai from 26-28 November 2018.
At the event, Borouge underpinned its growth projects and future plans that are perfectly aligned with the theme of this year’s GPCA Forum ‘Executing transformation and investing in growth’. The Forum provided Borouge with an opportunity to shed some lights on its commitment to inspire new ideas and develop unique solutions in collaboration with converters and brand owners by combining its expertise with fresh perspectives to unlock value for all stakeholders across the value chain and create a positive impact in society.
UAE BASIS FOR CONTINUOUS GROWTH
“I am proud to say that Borouge has expanded its capacity by 10 fold during the past two decades and our Ruwais production site has become now the world’s largest integrated polyolefin complex,” said Ahmed Omar Abdulla, CEO of Abu Dhabi Polymers Company (Borouge). “This is one of our key achievements over the past 20 years which would not have been possible without the hard work, dedication and loyalty of our talented people across our organisation.”
Borouge has committed itself to being a place where its people can grow and excel professionally through providing them with various programmes and continuous trainings to fully develop their potential and further contribute to Borouge’s future success.
Believing in INSPIRING TOMORROW through its creative, value creating plastics solutions, Borouge intends to more than double its current capacity when its new Borouge 4 plant comes on stream by 2025. The company is also going to build a fifth polypropylene (PP5) unit within its existing Borouge 3 plant in Ruwais, increasing Borouge’s polypropylene production by 25% to reach 2.24 million t/y.
“It’s our journey of continuous growth that will never stop to keep contributing to the industry value chain with our boundary pushing solutions that drive performance and create value for businesses and communities in the UAE and around the world. We do that with strict commitment to 100% HSE across all our functions and offices around the world.”
Borouge is supporting Abu Dhabi to become a centre of global petrochemical innovation, promoting the ‘Made in UAE’ and addressing market requirements across the value chain. Borouge is also one of the largest shippers and exporters of non-oil products which the company exports through Khalifa Port to its customers in more than 50 countries around the globe.
INNOVATION DRIVES BOROUGE’S GROWTH
"It’s our firm commitment to Growth, Excellence and Sustainability that strengthens our leading position in the market as a provider of choice for our customers with whom we work closely to understand their needs and challenges which our solutions can address,” said Wim Roels, CEO of Borouge Pte Ltd. “We are proud of being able to contribute to our customers’ success by providing them with our creative plastics solutions that meet their requirements and with our sales services and technical support that enhance their businesses.”
What makes Borouge stand out from other petrochemical companies in the region is its remarkable innovation capabilities and the advanced technologies it uses to develop new value added polymers. Thanks to the creative mindset of over 90 UAE and international researchers and engineers working at the Borouge Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi and the Application Centre in Shanghai, Borouge succeeded in obtaining more than 200 patents out of over 600 patents which the Company has filed at the World Intellectual Property Organisation database. More than 20% of Borouge’s annual sales volume is now derived from new products developed at the Centre.
COMMITTED TO SUSTAINABILITY WITH PLASTICS
In 2016, Borouge launched its Sustainability Goals for 2021 to increase focus on specific drivers of performance and further commitment to its long term social responsibility, environmental stewardship and economic growth in the UAE in line with the UAE's Vision 2021. Borouge has also a proud history of supporting local communities and fostering long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships and social initiatives. With several corporate social responsibility programmes that are being implemented for years, Borouge focuses its engagement with the communities in four areas: accessing water and sanitation, preserving environment, promoting science education, and encouraging volunteerism.
As it continues to deliver solutions that add value to businesses as well as to society, Borouge advocates adopting the plastics circular economy as an innovative driving force to ensure plastics sustainability, so plastics never end up in oceans or landfills, but rather be recycled to have a second chance of life. Borouge has other programmes through which it establishes partnerships to contribute to the protection of environment. Such programmes include ‘Water for the World’ which Borouge launched in 2007 with Borealis and has benefited over 800,000 people around the world. ‘Project STOP’, which was founded in 2017 by Borealis and SYSTEMIQ in partnership with other industry leaders, is another example of programmes through which Borouge collaborates with other international companies to address the marine litter problem.
From tomorrow’s infrastructural solutions that help enhance access to fresh water and sanitation and bring energy all around, to solutions that make cars lighter and producing less carbon emissions, Borouge is leading the way. From solutions that keep food fresh and safe all the way from the farms to our kitchen tables, to solutions that make reliable irrigation pipes to ensure richer harvests, to life-enhancing solutions that contribute to ensuring unbreakable and safe medical instruments, Borouge keeps setting an example.
