BOROUGE DEVELOPS CLOSED-LOOP SOLUTION FOR

HEAVY DUTY SHIPPING SACKS

  • Closed loop recycled polyolefins from used Polyethylene (PE) Heavy Duty Shipping Sacks allows for multiple recycling cycles within the same application when paired with Borouge's Borstar® and Anteo™ performance polyethylene grades
  • This pioneer initiative is a result of close collaboration with Borouge's leading value chain partners in China with the common goal of developing a sustainable solution with a lower carbon footprint

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – 19 October 2022: Borouge PLC  (“Borouge" or “the Company") (ADX symbol: BOROUGE / ISIN: AEE01072B225), a leading petrochemical company that provides innovative and differentiated polyolefin solutions, today announced the development of a new circular solution using post-consumer recycled content for PE-based heavy duty shipping sacks.

The pioneer initiative adds 30 per cent post-consumer recycled (PCR) content from used PE heavy duty shipping sacks (HDSS) together with booster grades from Borouge's Borstar® and Anteo™ PE portfolio for a truly sustainable new HDSS application.

Borouge worked closely with value chain partners, Han King Plastic Machinery, Kunshan Golden Alliance, Shanghai Longstone and Shanghai Tianqiang, to jointly develop this closed-loop PE for HDSS with the objective of developing a sustainable solution with a lower carbon footprint.

Typically, PE-based HDSS material is purposefully structured for superior performance to facilitate and protect goods in various environments during logistics and handling. With this new closed-loop solution, the same HDSS can now be made with recycled HDSS material without compromising on packaging integrity and performance.

Used, intact HDSS material is recovered through dedicated waste collection streams, and goes through an advanced mechanical recycling process. The recycled PE resins are then subjected to stringent material qualification before being incorporated with virgin PE to the end application for customer's validation, to ensure that packaging integrity and performance are fulfilled.

Formulated with Borouge's Borstar® and Anteo™ enhanced polyethylene, the packaging solution offers a balance of high stiffness and impact performance, excellent sealing properties and efficient processability.

“This latest circular solution enables multiple recycling cycles within the same application and this innovation takes us another step closer to the transformation towards a circular economy. We are pleased to be able to collaborate with our value chain partners and pilot this innovative solution to contribute to a lower carbon footprint." Said Mr Eddie Wang, Senior Vice President, Asia North, Borouge Pte Ltd.

As part of its commitment to helping customers create solutions to meet their own sustainability goals, Borouge continues to work on designing and developing consumer solutions that support a circular economy, through innovation and design for recyclability.

The Circular HDSS PE film will be showcased at the Borouge stand at the K 2022 (Hall 6, Stand A43) from 19 to 26 October 2022 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
