Borouge and Borealis are showcasing their latest portfolio of innovative solutions for the energy sector, including leading edge applications for the renewable energy, transmission, distribution and fibre optic sectors at Wire China 2020.
Responding to the market trend of utility companies seeking more compact power cable solutions, Borouge and Borealis have designed cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) solutions not only for defined voltages, but also to perform under heavy operating stresses.
High Voltage Solutions by Borouge
Borlink™ LS4201H for high voltage applications, first produced in Borouge’s state-of-the-art XLPE plant in Al Ruways, United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2017, has become well-established over the past three years in low stress HV applications with rated voltage up to 161kV.
Borouge is now introducing Borlink™ LS4201S intended for power cable applications in high stress of HV applications with rated voltage up to 230kV. Borlink™ LS4201S is produced under utmost cleanliness conditions, and is able to perform at a maximum operating stress of 10kV/mm, while offering XLPE cable producers the benefits of design flexibility, superior scorch security and reliability for long production campaigns, and varying cleanliness specifications as required.
With significantly improved scorch safety that lowers the risk of insulation defects and reduced degassing time, cable manufacturers can look to gain optimised production cycles and running times with improved overall safety and reliability.
Borlink™ LS4201S has successfully completed a type test in accordance with IEC62067 international standards and is at advanced stage of prequalification test by DNV-GL KEMA with expected test completion within 2020.
Supporting offshore XLPE applications
With over 50 years of proven experience in XLPE and semi-conductive compound development, including a 15-year track record in low-scorch HV XLPE technology, Borouge and Borealis are well-placed to serve the fast-growing offshore energy cable market.
Borlink™ Supercure technology is ideal for complex applications such as offshore wind power and submarine cables as it supports lifetime durability and reliability in cables given the high levels of cleanliness within the insulation compound. This enables the production of extensive cable lengths without factory joints, driving ease of installation with reduced risk of failure. To guarantee their absolute cleanliness, all Borlink™ Supercure insulations are produced and packed on specifically designed lines.
Borlink™ Supercure technology has been selected for Zhejiang Province’s Zhoushan 500kV Submarine Cable Project, involving the construction and laying of the world’s longest low scorch 500kV submarine cable connecting Zhoushan City to Ningbo City, providing clean energy and increasing power supply to the Zhoushan Archipelago New Area.
This project was also a watershed for Chinese submarine cable makers Hengtong, Zhongtian Technology Submarine (ZTT) and Ningbo Orient as it was the first time that 500kV submarine cables were made domestically. All three cable makers selected Borlink™ LS4201EHV and LE0500 by Borouge and Borealis to produce the cables, with a record 18.15km of continuous cable length without joints being produced.
