BOROUGE MATERIALS USED TO BUILD THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF JUBAIL ISLAND

  • Jubail Island to use first, ‘Made In UAE’ pipes that are recyclable, highly sustainable and durable
  • Move supports the ‘Make it in the Emirates’ initiative to enhance the capital’s infrastructure using locally sourced materials

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. December 14, 2022: Borouge (ADX symbol: BOROUGE / ISIN: AEE01072B225), a leading petrochemical company that provides innovative and differentiated polyolefin solutions, announced its latest undertaking to enhance the infrastructure of Jubail Island through promoting high density polyethylene (HDPE) material in the manufacture of piping systems deployed on the island.

Located between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, Jubail Island is currently undergoing a real estate development project and Abu Dhabi Sewerage Services Company (ADSSC) is building the sewerage network which employs double wall corrugated (DWC) pipes made of Borouge’s innovative, ‘Made In UAE’ polymers and locally produced by Union Pipes Industries. Unlike traditional pipes made from other materials, the DWC pipes are mechanically joined, easily transported, highly resistant to corrosive gases, chemicals and infiltration. The pipes also protect the natural ground water and environment. This will ensure that the sewerage system on the island is developed in compliance with the highest technical specifications.

Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chief Executive Officer, Borouge said: “Borouge is proud to be playing a key role in helping build the infrastructure of Jubail Island. ADSSC’s requirements created a clear starting point for our innovation team to contribute to creating the first, ‘Made In UAE’ double wall corrugated piping system which will transform the infrastructure of the island. In collaboration with our value-chain partner Union Pipes Industries, we are creating locally sourced and produced infrastructure that acts as a benchmark for communities today and tomorrow while remaining committed to enabling recyclable, sustainable end-use products.”

Ahmed Al Shamsi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at ADSSC, said: “This announcement signifies ADSSC’s commitment to sharing its expertise to drive the production and deployment of the innovative and locally-produced materials in infrastructure improvement projects. We are delighted to see a leading petrochemical company such as Borouge help improve the Emirate’s overall infrastructure through sustainable impact that contributes towards an environmentally friendly circular economy. Thanks to the excellent performance of the innovative pipe solutions from Borouge, we could with confidence upgrade our specifications to double wall corrugated sewage pipes at Jubail Island and other future projects.”

Mohamed Hageb, General Manager, Union Pipes Industry: “Our collaboration with Borouge has played an important role in introducing high-quality polyethylene pipes and fittings in the UAE, in GCC and beyond. Throughout the years we have pioneered many firsts on a regional and global level, enabling the global polyethylene pipe industry. Together, we have recently introduced Double Walled Corrugated pipes in Abu Dhabi and we look forward to continuing our fruitful partnership.”

With a lifespan of 50 years, the DWC pipes are environmentally friendly and highly recyclable at the end of their useful life. To ensure higher sustainability and durability of the pipes, the pipes were designed and developed according to the specifications and expertise provided by ADSSC. The development project also includes the installation of a mock-up network; HDPE structural manhole of 1600mm diameter with a five-meter depth, having 117mm solid wall, connection coupling and 500mm diameter DWC pipeline. Jubail Island will comprise over 1,300 housing units including waterfront villas, plots of land, townhouses, and apartments within six distinct villages with an area covering more than 40 million square meters.

The installation of the new piping system on Jubail Island comes in line with the efforts to enhance the national In-Country Value Programme (ICV), support national industries and build a more sustainable circular economy. To achieve these objectives, Borouge seeks to promote its collaboration with local industrial companies that support innovation and build and deliver projects that meet the goals and future vision of Abu Dhabi. These efforts continue to enable a sustainable environment for everyone who lives and works in Abu Dhabi.

Moreover, this development contributes to achieving the key strategic goal overseen by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT), “Operation 300bn”, which is designed to develop the UAE’s vibrant industrial sector and amplify its role in advancing and diversifying the growing national economy. The new Jubail Island pipe system feeds into this vision to boost the UAE economy by utilising locally produced material and creating new job opportunities for technical professionals while safeguarding the environment.
