  • Borouge eyes growth opportunities in wire and cable projects that support China’s infrastructure developments
  • Second XLPE production plant at upcoming Borouge 4 facility set to meet rising demand for renewable energy projects

SHANGHAI, CHINA – 26 SEPTEMBER 2024: Borouge Plc (“Borouge” or “the Company”) Borouge, a leading petrochemicals company that provides innovative and differentiated polyolefins solutions, is pleased to announce its participation with Borealis at wire China 2024, one of the largest wire and cable industry trade fairs.

Borouge was recently awarded the Ringier Technology Innovation Award for Borlink™LS4201S, in recognition of the product’s outstanding performance in cross linkable insulation of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) power cables with rated voltages up to 230kV. The award recognises best-in-class within China and is testament to Borouge’s ongoing commitment to develop high-quality, innovative solutions.

“The wire and cable industry plays a vital role in enabling the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable environment. Borouge collaborates closely with customers and value chain partners in China and globally to develop solutions that enhance energy efficiency, enable renewable energy adoption and lower the industry’s carbon footprint. We were honoured to receive the innovation award for Borlink™ LS4201S, as this highlights Borouge’s commitment to creating top-quality, high-performance energy solutions,” said Jianwei Dong, Senior Vice President, Asia North, Borouge.

Growth opportunities in China

With over 25 years of significant growth in China, Borouge has made substantial contributions to notable infrastructure projects across the country. Utilising Borealis' Borlink™ technology in polymeric insulation materials, Borouge has played a crucial role in the safe and efficient transmission of high-voltage direct current electricity, particularly in the Jiangsu Rudong offshore wind project.

As China continues to invest in major grid projects nationwide, Borouge has celebrated successes such as the first 500kV underground cable project in Guangzhou and the world’s first 3-core 500kV submarine cables in Yangjiang (Qingzhou 1&2) for offshore wind applications.

Borlink™ LS4201S, produced by Borouge, facilitates long run extrusions for submarine cable applications and supports the construction of Huizhou port ǁ PA Offshore Wind Farm, the first million-kilowatt offshore wind power base in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Borouge and Borealis are set to increase the supply of cross-linked polyethylene to China, reaffirming our support for the country’s offshore wind sector, electrification drive, and energy supply chain.

Expanding XLPE capacity

Borouge is actively advancing its polyethylene production capabilities with the Borouge 4 project, expected to be completed in 2025, and set to expand production capacity by 1.4 million tonnes to 6.4 million tonnes per annum.

As part of the upcoming Borouge 4 facility, Borouge is scheduled to complete a second production plant dedicated to manufacturing XLPE by the end of 2025. The plant is expected to produce 100,000 tonnes per annum of XLPE material for the wire and cable market.

Borouge 4, being built by Borouge on behalf of the project’s owners, ADNOC and Borealis, is now over 70% complete. Once completed, it will make Borouge’s Al Ruwais production site the world’s largest single-site polyolefin complex, boosting annual production capacity by 28%. This will further enhance Borouge’s capabilities to cater to major markets such as China, with vital materials that contribute to critical sectors and energy projects that will enhance livelihoods in communities around the world.
